Our Mission.
Promoting Mental Health
According to the Canadian Community Health Survey - Mental Health (2012), 1 in 3 Canadians will be affected by mental illness during their lifetime. Moreover, recent statistics suggest that about 15% of Canadians use health services for mental illness. Among these, Canadian females are 30% more likely to use health services for mental illnesses than Canadian males. Another concerning fact is that the use of health services for mental illnesses among our young population (19 and under) is growing steadily at an average rate of 2.6% per year. In a holistic paradigm, a mental illness can negatively impact the physical health of an individual and can cause severe emotional and behavioral problems. Consequently, the quality of life among individuals affected by mental illness can be lower.
Our mission
Prasanna Wellness is focused on enhancing the wellness of individuals in Canada, to elevate their quality of life. Our mission is to promote mental wellness by conducting workshops on breathing techniques, meditation, and yoga for the general public. As these complementary health approaches become mainstream, their benefits are becoming evident to our society and, more importantly, are being recognized by the scientific community. Recent studies on meditation and breathing techniques or exercises are shown to reduce stress, anxiety, pain, and insomnia while fostering general mental well-being and development and/or specific capacities such as calm, clarity, and concentration. With the sincere intention to bring a positive change in our society’s mental health, we bring to you wellness programs that are rooted in the rich history of meditation that goes back thousands of years.
Our approach
We recognize that the accessibility of meditation-based programs to the general public can be limited by two main barriers: the cost of programs and physical location. With the rising cost of living, individuals may not be willing to spend on a costly meditation retreat. More importantly, low-income families, who may not have the economic resources to participate in such programs, are already known to be at risk of mental and social problems. Therefore, with the aim of eliminating the socioeconomic aspect, we do not charge course fees for any of our wellness programs; however, a $20 registration fee enables us to cover our operating expenses. Further, often meditation programs are offered in major cities leaving little to no access to individuals from rural and remote communities. In order to bring down this spatial barrier, we conduct all our courses in a virtual or online format.
